International Online Competition

Double bass edition

The Latin Orchestra of Europe is pleased to announce its first international online competition. The main objective of this competition is to strengthen collective identity and musical socialisation, to disseminate music in all its forms and genres and to promote and encourage the musical activity of instrumentalists and composers from all over the world.

  4. Prize: Thomastik. It will be awarded by a public vote for the best performance of the Latin American work by the composer in residence.

Rules of the Competition

  1. The International Online Competition 2021 Double Bass edition is organised by the association Latin Orchestra of Europe e. V. based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It will take place online from 20 to 30 May 2021.
  2. Double bass players of all nationalities between 16 and 35 years of age are eligible to participate.
  3. The competition will take place in four rounds, the winners of which will be selected by a jury of international stature.
  4. Successful completion of one round will give access to the next round.
  5. The results of the respective rounds will be announced by email as well as on our Facebook page (@latinorchestraofeurope).
  6. Participants must send one video per round with the required repertoire via WeTransfer or Google Drive in one single uncut take to the email address competitionloe@gmail.com (See below Repertoire / Video Submission and Publication of Results / Technical Proposals for Good Audio and Video Quality).
  7. The videos will be broadcasted on our Facebook page within the framework of the Competition from 20 to 30 May 2021.
  8. All rounds are open and subject to public appraisal.
  9. The Organising Committee of the Latin Orchestra of Europe e. V will determine the order in which the participants will perform.
  10. The final results of the competition will be announced on Sunday 30 May 2021 at 20:00 (Local European Time) on the Latin Orchestra of Europe Facebook page. Prizes and awards will then be announced to the winners.
  11. By entering the competition, participants authorise the organiser, i.e., the Latin Orchestra of Europe e. V., to use all photographic, video and audio material of the competition at its discretion.
  12. The decision of the jury is final and incontestable.
  13. By entering the competition, participants accept the rules and regulations of the competition.
  14. Participants who are minors must present an authorisation from their legal representative.
  15. The deadline for registration and video submission is April 15, 2021.
  16. The registration fee is 25 € Euros. Payment should be made to the bank account provided or via PayPal to the email address competitionloe@gmail.com. Please indicate the contestant’s full name, nationality, and the word “Competition”.

Repertoire / Submission of videos / Publication of

First round

Participants must perform a work of their choice with or without piano. The overall performance must be a minimum of 3, and a maximum of 5 minutes.

Video submission:                                         15 April 2021 until 23:59 pm (European Local Time)

Publication of Results:                                  13 May 2021.

Second round

Participants must perform the following programme:

  • Domenico Dragonetti (1763 – 1846): One of the following waltzes:

Waltz No. 6 or Waltz No. 4. (G. Henle Verlag – Urtext).

 

Video submission:                                         16 May 2021 until 23:59 pm (European Local Time)

Publication of Results:                                  22 May 2021.

Semifinal round

Participants must perform the following programme:

  • Teppo Hauta (1941 -): Kadenza.
  • Rodrigo Mata (Composer in Residence): Commissioned work.

*The work commissioned for the competition will be provided to participants by e-mail 15 days before the opening of the competition.

Video submission:                                         23 May 2021 until 23:59 pm (European Local Time)

Publication of Results:                                  26 May 2021.

Final round

Participants must perform the following programme:

  • François Rabbath (1931 -): Iberique Peninsulaire.
  • Hans Fryba (1899 – 1986): Two Movements without repetition from Suite im Alten Stil
  • Domenico Dragonetti (1763 – 1846): One of the following waltzes:

Waltz No. 1, 3, 5, 11. (G. Henle Verlag – Urtext)

Video submission:                                         27 May 2021 until 23:59 pm (European Local Time)

Publication of Results:                                  30 May 2021.

Recording Requirements

  • The work must be recorded unedited and uncut.
  • Microphones should be placed in the right position for good sound quality. The instrument must be heard clean and clear enough.
  • The video recording should be made from a fixed camera perspective. The musician’s hands and face must be always fully visible.
  • Recordings will be considered if they meet the above conditions (no cuts).

Technical proposals for good quality Audio and Video

  • Video quality – 720p or 1080i or 1080p
  • Audio quality – 256kbps mp3 or 128aac
  • File formats – mp4 or mov
  • 9 Mbit, max. 900 MB
